Welcome to the Long Island Gaels Athletic Club

Established in 2000, the Long Island Gaels has a short but rich history. The club is mainly comprised of Irish American people who strive to promote Irish heritage and culture. One of the main sports they play is Gaelic (Irish) football. This is one of the oldest sports in the world. It is played on a field slightly larger than an American football field with fifteen players on each team. The playing format resembles a combination of soccer and American football. It is a fast-paced and entertaining game to watch. No heavy padding is required, shin guards are optional. At present the club has four underage teams; Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, and Under 14. They have players from the North Shore to the South Shore, from Huntington to Point Lookout. At present they are training and playing in Cedar Creek Park in Wantagh. They compete against twelve other clubs around the Tri-State area. Long Island Gaels are the only Gaelic football club on Long Island. They are looking to expand their program on the Island. If you have children in your area who may be interested, they will run a training session in your area. Scholarships and other promotions have also been discussed. The underage program is supported and sponsored by the Irish American Society, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Irish Americans in Government to name a few.

For those who feel energetic and are too old to play underage, they also have a Senior Gaelic Football team and a soccer team who are currently in training. You do not have to be a player to become a member of the club. Basic membership is $30 annually, family membership is $50 annually. Membership is open to all.

“The Dungloe Show” earns Draw #3
Jun 10, 2007, 9:33 pm
If it wasn't for bad luck, Tyrone had no luck at all: in the first eleven minutes they made 8 wides without a single score. At the opposite end of the pitch Martin Ferry put over the first point of the game eight minutes in. It wasn't until Ferry's second point, 18 minutes into the game that Long Island would get on the board again at 0-4 to 0-2. With the sun shining into the eyes of the 2006 All-Star Goalie, Brian McGonigle was able to come out high and low to prevent anything from going past him. (Paddy ‘Yank' Lonergan might even get a vote for goalie of the year 2007 with his outstanding save!)Ferry would score one more time before the half leaving the score at Tyrone 0-6 to Long Island-Brooklyn 0-3.
Tyrone opened the second half with a quick point, only to be answered by Derek McGrath's accuracy. Richie O'Connor (who hails to be from Tip, proved to be part of the ‘The Dungloe Show') was introduced with 18 minutes to go; between Mark Boyle, Martin Ferry, Richie O'Connor and Derek McGrath the offense was turned on and the Long Island team that Gaelic Park has become used to seeing came alive. Similar to Sunday's game, McGrath would score the last three points making it level at the final whistle.
Captain Enda Lally, Tennessee Soccer Star Pat Ashe, and Mark "Diesel" McGeown were able to contain the Tyrone attack, consisting of three current and one former county player. Subs Phillip Hughes (yes the one and only famous full-forward is back) and Daniel Byrne contributed to the surge of attack in the last ten minutes.
With a ten day rest ahead Long Island-Brooklyn will be preparing for their next match against Donegal under the lights at 8pm on June 20. As long as our "boys of summer" remember they are not playing for their native county, this should be the one to break our pattern of draws.
